Hi Nick,I get the same issues on a spare box I have running ESXi 4.1 Update 1, I have also tried Update 2 and the latest patched ESXi 4.1.0 582267 with a Xeon e53xx, not had chance to try ESXi v5 yet. However, it works fine when I trywith Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V on an i5 M520.Take a look at these older posts as a guide:It lists some official Microsoft info from Steven Sinofsky as to what runs and what doesnt from an MS perspective. Also take a look at the whole thread at the link below which has plenty of tips in it for various other platforms and ways of gettingit to run on them:Basically from the posts, it boils down to you need the very latest VMware Workstation (8+ with the latest updates) or vSphere/ESX/ESXi (5+ with the latest updates), also seems to work fine with Virtualbox (using the latest version from the posts)and is obviously fine with Microsoft Hyper-V on 2008R2 SP1 (from my tests).I guess anything older and you will run into problems becuase of the reasons Steven mentioned in his post.
It will also depend on the other software vendors on which virtualisation platforms they chose to fix, when and if they plan to put it inolder versions (such as ESXi 4.1)!More information is available from VMware here:What versions and patch levels are you running and have you tried any others, including the methods like the thread suggests? Hi,According to my research, this can be a compatibility issue between VMWare and Windows 8 Consumer PreviewServer 8 Beta.I don’t know the VMWare products line, but the old version of VMWare products cannot support Windows 8. I find many VMWare Workstation 6.0 and 7.0 users encountered the same issuewith you. They fixed this issue by upgrading to VMWare Workstation 8.0.
If your VMWare 4.5 host server is not the latest version, please try to use VMWare Workstation 8.0 to check the result. Otherwise, please also try to ask VMWare for the Windows 8 compatibilityupdates.Regards,Arthur LiTechNet Community Support.

I have just downloaded and installed the Windows 8 Consumer preview in an Oracle VirtualBox setup and initially got the same HALINITIALIZATIONFAILED error at the start of installation. However, with a bit of experimentation I found that turning on thePAE/NX checkbox in the 'Processor' tab under 'System' was the key setting that did the trick. I don't know if that gives any clues as to the problems in a VMware environment. Anyway, it has been running OK with the following setup:-Host - Dell Vostro laptop Vista Ultimate 32bit Intel Core Duo 2.2GHz 4GB RAM running Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.8 r75467Guest - Windows 8 Consumer preview 32 bit 1024MB RAM 64 or 128MB Video RAM, 20GB fixed size VHD file and software ISO mounted to a a virtual DVD drive.VirtualBox PC settings - 2 processors, 3D and 2D acceleration enabled, SATA AHCI interface for Virtual HDU and PIIX4 IDE for DVD, nework bridged via host's wireless adaptor.Hope this is helpful.Kind regards.
